| FREE HEALTH LECTURE ON SLEEP APNEA AT |
| Date : - 25/06/2009 |
|
Sleep apnea is a major sleep disorder that can
affect anyone at any age. It occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep and can negatively affect their activities while awake. Antelope Valley Hospital (AVH) is offering a free health lecture to help the community better understand
treatment options available for sleep apnea on Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.
“The consequences of untreated sleep apnea can be avoided with proper diagnosis and treatment,” says Syed Ahmed, M.D., an Internal Medicine/Pulmonary/Critical Care/Sleep Disorders Specialist on staff at AV Hospital. “Daily performance and scholastic development can be negatively affected by sleep apnea, and lack of restful sleep can cause automobile accidents as well.”
There are two types of sleep apnea: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Central Sleep Apnea. OSA is the more common form and is the result of airway blockage in the back of the throat. While anyone can be affected by sleep apnea, if you are male, overweight, over the age of 40, have large tonsils or a have family history of sleep apnea then you may be at a higher risk of having this disorder. Lifestyle changes
and sleep position adjustments are potential ways to avoid invasive surgery.
“AV Hospital has partnered with local physicians to address the needs of sleep apnea sufferers with the new Desert Hills Sleep Disorders Center,” says Edward
Mirzabegian, AVH Chief Executive officer. “Conveniently located on the AVH campus,
Desert Hills saves the community time by eliminating the need to drive out of town for a full service sleep disorder center.”
The free AVH health lecture on Thursday, June 25 will begin at 6:30 p.m. It will be held at the AV Outpatient Imaging Building 44105 15th Street West, Lancaster (the corner of J-5 and 15th Street West) on the 4th floor, in conference room 15. To reserve a seat, please call (661) 726-6499 or send an e-mail to
communityrelations@avhospital.org. Please leave your name, contact number, and number of guests attending the lecture.
