CDH Executive Receives American Heart Association's Highest Award |
Date : - 21/04/2009 |
WINFIELD, Ill., April 21, 2009 - The American Heart Association presented its Gold Heart Award yesterday to David Cooke, M.D., vice president of quality and safety at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Ill. The award is the highest honor the association bestows to volunteers who have provided continued, distinguished service.
The award was presented at the association's 2009 Gold Heart Banquet held in Washington, D.C.
Cooke is currently president of the association's Midwest Affiliate, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. He began volunteering for the association in 1984, at the former Chicago Affiliate.
Cooke has made numerous contributions to the association's efforts to promote public health awareness of heart health issues, smoke-free legislation and school physical education programs. He is one of the association's primary media spokespersons in the Midwest and wrote a regular heart-health newspaper column for the Pioneer Press, a newspaper chain in suburban Chicago.
Cooke has been instrumental in establishing one of the association's newest initiatives, Mission: Lifeline, in Chicago-area hospitals. Mission: Lifeline seeks to save lives by closing the gaps that separate STEMI patients (those who experience the most critical type of heart attacks) from timely access to appropriate treatment. He has led efforts to raise funds for the placement of automated external defibrillators (AED) in public locations. He also led a collaborative effort with the Illinois Department of Public Health to establish a Cardiovascular Disease Task Force for Illinois.
Cooke served on the association's national Board of Directors from 1999 to 2001, is a fellow of the organization's Council on Clinical Cardiology and a member of its Interdisciplinary Council on Quality of Care and Outcomes Research.
Cooke came to Central DuPage Hospital in 2002 from Lutheran General Hospital, where he served as associate director of Cardiology. His first position at Central DuPage Hospital was medical director of Cardiovascular Services. In 2005 he was named medical director of Safety and Quality and in 2007 he was promoted to vice president of this area.
