Cancer Care Manitoba
Made in Manitoba prevention, early detection message to go province-wide
Date : - 23/10/2007
A new video production highlighting the importance of screening for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer will soon be available throughout the province thanks to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

"The Bears on Broadway created a lot of awareness and we are so pleased to be able to go another step further," said Barry McArton, Executive Director, CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. "By partnering with the provincial screening programs on this important initiative we can continue to share information about participating in a screening program and understanding the risks and benefits."

The DVD, supported by $62,830 in Foundation funding, will feature four parts: learning the "bear facts" - the five steps you can take to reduce your cancer risk as promoted through the Bears on Broadway campaign - be smoke-free, eat well, shape up, cover up, and check up; cervical screening and what you should know about Pap tests; breast screening and facts on risk factors, mammograms and signs and symptoms of breast cancer; and colorectal screening and what age to begin, where to get a kit and the pros and cons of screening.

"Having a made in Manitoba video ensures Manitobans receive relevant and provincially accurate information," said Marion Harrison, Director of Screening Programs at CancerCare Manitoba, adding the DVD would be distributed to health educators around the province as well as community locations like public libraries and northern nursing stations, and online at CancerCare Manitoba's web site - www.cancercare.mb.ca.

Both the Manitoba Breast Screening Program and the Manitoba Cervical Cancer Screening Program offer materials in many different languages and this DVD will continue providing this service and will be available in Chinese, Cree, Filipino, French, Hindi, Ojibway, Punjabi, Spanish and Vietnamese.
