| Foundation teams up with high school to stamp out smoking |
| Date : - 09/10/2007 |

The average age when children light up a cigarette for the first time is 11-years-old. To prevent elementary school students from taking that first puff, a group of high school students have joined together with the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation and the Guardian Angel Youth Awareness Committee to talk to kids on their own turf.
Students from West Kildonan Collegiate have formed a SWAT team - Students Working Against Tobacco - and part of their mandate is to get the message out to the younger grades that smoking isn?t cool.
"We know that tobacco use is the single most important cause of preventable cancer deaths," says Joan Stephens, Director of Education, CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. "The work these students are doing towards tobacco prevention is remarkable, and we are thrilled and proud to sponsor their presentation."
"Having high school students come into our classrooms and speak frankly about smoking provides a unique perspective for our students and one that will likely leave a strong impression," said Neil Wilcox, Vice-Principal, John M. King School.
Children as well as teachers from John M. King will be available for comment after the session. Cameras may be used in the classroom during the presentation, but elementary students cannot be identified. Students from West Kildonan Collegiate will be available for interviews as well. |
