Cambridge Memorial Hospital
CMH imposes hospital restrictions in bid to control enteric outbreak
Date : - 12/01/2009
Cambridge Memorial Hospital is seeking the public’s help in tackling an enteric outbreak affecting patients and staff on its Medicine Unit.

“Please do not visit if you are currently ill or have been in contact with a person who has been ill in the past 48 hours,” CMH President & Chief Executive Officer Julia N. Dumanian said in a public appeal today.

Ms. Dumanian said the best healthcare strategy when a community bug comes into the hospital is to be vigilant about visitor restrictions. Effective Sunday, when the outbreak hit the 5th Floor Medicine Unit, Ms. Dumanian called for visitor restrictions – one visitor per patient per day – on all units, and strict enforcement of the 2-8 p.m. visiting hours.

“Restricting visitors to the hospital is the best way for us to contain this outbreak now widespread and making the rounds in the Cambridge community,” she said. As the hospital was declaring the outbreak on the Medicine Unit on Sunday, Public Health had just lifted a similar outbreak of vomiting and/or diarrhea on Continuing Care that was in effect all of last week.

Ms. Dumanian said the hospital and Public Health officials are working together on measures to maintain patient services on the Medicine Unit. In addition to limiting movement to and from the area, extra nursing staff and housekeeping have been deployed.

“We apologize to our patients and their families for the inconvenience this causes them around hospital visiting but it’s essential to ensuring quality care and safety for patients and staff,” said Ms. Dumanian. “We’ve contacted family members to explain the situation and to ask for their support in helping us get through the next few days of this outbreak.”
