Arroyo Grande Comm Hospital
Hospital to Host United Blood Bank Blood Drive
Date : - 06/07/2009
For most, the summer season is a busy time for taking vacations and time away from home; for blood banks, it’s often a time of critical blood shortages. Blood shortages arise during the summer season most notably because busy holiday schedules result in fewer donations and summer travel increases the likelihood of highway accidents with victims who need blood transfusions. To ensure an adequate local supply of blood throughout the summer, Arroyo Grande Community Hospital (AGCH) will host a United Blood Services Summer Blood Drive on Friday, July 10, 2009.

Representatives from United Blood Services will be accepting donations in their mobile blood donation bus from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. in the parking lot of Arroyo Grande Community Hospital located at 345 South Halcyon Road in Arroyo Grande. In exchange for giving a pint, all blood donors will receive a gift certificate for a pint of Doc Burnstein’s delicious homemade ice cream and be entered into a contest to win a brand new 2010 Toyota Prius! Everyone who donates blood during United Blood Bank of the Central Coast’s Summer Blood Drive is eligible to win the Prius. The winning name will be chosen on September 30, 2009. Some restrictions apply. For complete rules and more details about United Blood Services of the Central Coast, check their website at http://www.unitedbloodservices.org. .

On average, someone in the world needs a blood transfusion every three seconds. Blood is always needed for the treatment of accident victims, cancer patients, hemophiliacs and surgery patients. Even though about 60 percent of the population is eligible to donate blood, less than five percent actually do.

The blood donation process is simple, takes only about one hour and is virtually pain free. Eligible blood donors must be in good health, without symptoms of cold, flu or cough. Photo identification is required and donors are reminded to eat and drink plenty of fluids on the day of donation.

To make an appointment to donate blood at the United Blood Services Summer Blood Drive at Arroyo Grande Community Hospital on Friday, July 10, 2009, call United Blood Services in San Luis Obispo County at 805.543.4290.

For more information about Friday’s blood drive, contact Anna Scott, AGCH Media Relations and Communications Manager at 805.473.7695.
