Ft. Lauderdale, FL- As a way to promote learning through doing, Broward General Medical Center has welcomed a Simulation Learning Center to its facility. Viewed as an approach to help strengthen the skills and competencies of new and current employees, this center will provide nurses with the opportunity to receive the same type of hands-on training that is critical to their profession and to their patients. The utilization of the simulation lab will promote competency development through the concept of reflective learning and theory-practice integration.
Before working on real patients, nurses will be able to practice every day procedures on “Mega Code Kelly,” a life-like mannequin intended to simulate medical scenarios from basic to traumatic. “Kelly” has the ability to produce more than 1,400 cardiac rhythm variations as well as vocal sounds to let nurses know there may be a medical condition. The mannequin was designed for practice of advanced, difficult and obstructed airway scenarios and IV therapy.
“Collectively, we understand how apprehensive a new nurse can be when he/she begins caring for patients,” said Paul Brattan, RN, MS, CCRN. “We believe the simulation will allow our new nurses to have hands-on practice and to build confidence and experience which will ensure our patients are getting the best possible care.”
Simulation learning supports the development of clinical judgment in nursing. Procedures will be video-taped and replayed to nurses in order to critique their strengths and weaknesses. This will encourage staff retention and increased patient safety, due to nurses having training sessions with “Kelly,” the simulated patient. The Learning Center will serve as an adjunct to nursing theory to support critical thinking with real life scenarios and will expose nurses to critical events in a controlled reproducible environment.
“Broward General Medical Center is very fortunate to be on the cutting edge with the Simulation Learning Center,” said Christine Holod, RN, MSN, FNP-C. "Although a relatively new learning concept, the Simulation Learning Center aims to improve clinical competencies among employees and to influence positive patient outcomes."
