“We are excited to have Board Certified Neurosurgeon, Dr. Philip Henkin, join Brandon Regional Hospital, to complement the existing neurosurgeons already on our Medical Staff,” announced Mike Fencel, CEO. “Dr. Henkin’s specialty is computer navigation-assisted cranial and spinal surgery, which is less invasive to the patient. We are in the process of constructing a “BrainLab” for Dr. Henkin and others to perform these high-tech procedures with state-of-the-art equipment.”
Dr. Henkin relocated with his wife and two children, from Jacksonville, Florida, where he was the Director of the Spine and Brain Institute at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Prior to that position, he served at various Jacksonville hospitals including St. Vincent’s, Baptist Medical Center Beaches, Memorial Hospital, and Baptist Medical South as the Division Chief of Neurosurgery. With his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from MIT, Dr. Henkin went to medical school at Ohio State University and performed his residency and internship at Duke Medical Center. His dedication to patient education will be showcased at the hospital’s Stroke Award Celebration on Monday, September 29th from 3-5 p.m. in the Tower A reception area. Dr. Henkin will be on hand to talk about the BrainLab technology and its role in helping stroke patients.
Dr. Henkin stated, “I am excited about all the new technological advances that Brandon Regional Hospital is investing in to provide the best in patient care. From the BrainLab equipment, to the opening of the 4th floor Neuroscience Center later this year and the launching of CyberKnife Cancer Center the beginning of 2009, people in our community will continue to experience compassionate care, close to home.”
Brandon Regional Hospital is a full acute care facility, with 367 beds, accredited as a Chest Pain Center with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) and JCAHO Primary Stroke Center certification. With over 60,000 births and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Brandon Regional Hospital is in the top 3 birthing hospitals in Hillsborough County. Other major services include the Heart & Vascular Center and the Spine Care Center of West Florida. The Neuroscience Center will be opening at the end of 2008, adding 40 more beds and a new level of care for the community featuring treatments for brain and spinal tumors, epilepsy, spinal disorders and more. The CyberKnife Cancer Center at Brandon Regional Hospital will be opening in the early part of 2009 offering a non invasive way to treat cancer.
