MdBriefCase Diabetes Modules a Colossal Success
Date : - 07/05/2009
In only five months, more than 5,500 Canadian healthcare professionals have benefited from the new mdBriefCase on-line continuing health education modules based on the Canadian Diabetes Association 2008 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prevention and Management of Diabetes in Canada (2008 Guidelines).

Free to healthcare professionals, the initial 11 modules were developed by the Canadian Diabetes Association, Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (CSEM) and mdBriefCase and were funded through educational grants from Novo Nordisk, Johnson & Johnson, Boehringer Ingelheim and GSK Canada Inc.

The diabetes modules cover a variety of topics such as optimizing care, diabetes in pregnancy, insulin and pharmacotherapy. Program participants are provided with dynamic eLearning courses that summarize the 2008 Guidelines in practical terms and give them an opportunity to apply their learning immediately through interactive case studies and peer discussion.

The modules are available at http://www.AdvancingIn.com and http://www.rxBriefCase.com .

Initial feedback from these programs has been extremely positive. Based on a recent participant survey, 98% reported that the learning was helpful to their practice. The majority felt they could implement these recommendations immediately in their practice and provided concrete examples of ways they will improve patient care.

“It is very rewarding to be involved in such an important initiative”, says Nancy Thomson, VP of mdBriefCase. “With our reach to over 72,000 health professionals, we are thrilled to be in a position to assist the Canadian Diabetes Association and CSEM with guidelines implementation. The sheer number of participants in these programs reinforces how important diabetes education is. We will continue to work with the Canadian Diabetes Association and CSEM to support health professionals and ultimately, improve patient outcomes.”

“We’re pleased that the healthcare community and clinicians are engaging with the 2008 Clinical Practice Guidelines through the mdBriefCase diabetes modules,” said Margaret Beatty, Vice President, Research, Professional Education and Government Affairs, Canadian Diabetes Association. “The 2008 Guidelines are the best and most current evidence-based clinical practice data for healthcare professionals treating patients that are living with or at risk of diabetes. We hope many more thousands of Canadian healthcare professionals will use the diabetes modules in the months and years ahead.”

“We are very excited about the initial results on these programs,” said Dr. Robert Josse, chair, eCME programs and past president CSEM. “mdBriefCase has given us the ability to quickly disseminate information on the new 2008 Guidelines and address educational gaps in an extremely effective way.”
