Dorset County Hospital
Poole invests in same sex facilities to protect patients' privacy
Date : - 30/06/2009
Hospitals across the South West are making major improvements to ensure that men and women do not have to share sleeping areas, bathrooms or toilets while being treated as inpatients.

Poole Hospital has invested in bathroom facilities to increase the number of single sex toilets and showers available, and our wards offer same sex accommodation in all areas where we can plan for the gender mix of patients. We are also implementing plans to increase the number of single rooms in the Hospital.

Poole Hospital is compliant in respect of its wards with regard to same sex accommodation.

The Department of Health has given a clear pledge to all but eliminate mixed sex NHS accommodation by the end of June this year and is funding improvements worth up to £10 million across the South West through the Privacy and Dignity Challenge Fund.

Patients will benefit from a new range of measures to ensure that hospitals can provide same sex accommodation in all but exceptional cases. The exception to the rule is where the nature of very specialised areas means that clinical staff cannot plan for the gender mix of patients being treated, which is the case in some clinical areas within Poole Hospital.

Areas exempt from this compliance include unpredictable emergency settings such as A&E, Intensive Care or High Dependency Units, where very small numbers of patients are receiving one-to-one nursing, such as following major surgery or emergency treatment following a heart attack.

I am delighted that we are compliant and are able to back up the Poole Approach with these practical improvements to enhance the care we give to our patients.

Sue Sutherland, Chief Executive, Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
