| Paralympic torch comes to SickKids |

With the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Paralympic Games one week away, The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) had the privilege of hosting a pit stop of the Paralympic torch earlier this morning. The torch is in the city as part of the cross-country torch relay.
The half-hour detour at SickKids included a speech made by Jim Garner, Executive Vice President, Corporate Services, who emphasized the passion, courage and determination of athletes in relation to the children at SickKids who have a disability.
He proudly introduced Erica Scarff, SickKids Foundation outpatient ambassador, who was selected to carry the lantern to Nathan Philips Square where the relay celebration continued into the afternoon. Erica, 13, received treatment for osteosarcoma for nearly a year at SickKids and proudly spoke of her involvement in the relay.
“To me the Paralympic torch represents possibility,” says Scarff. “The Paralympics show that people can do anything, which means a lot to people at SickKids.”
Coinciding with the First Nations theme, the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto was involved with the creation of a lantern, which was used to transport the flame. The celebration concluded with a traditional healing song and dance performance by its members.
