NGH Housekeeping Team -
Keeping a Clean and Safe Environment for All
Housekeeping-Laundry Appreciation Week March 8 -12
Dedication and diligence, its all part of a days work for the Housekeeping and Laundry Team at Norfolk General Hospital and The Norfolk Hospital Nursing
Home. However, keeping NGH and NHNH clean and orderly is much more than shiny floors and sparkling mirrors, it also includes combating annoying microorganisms in hard to find locations and being front line defenders for infection control. This week, staff will
be acknowledged for their efforts during Housekeeping/Laundry Appreciation.
Being part of a successful housekeeping team is more diverse than one may think and sometimes a challenge in large organization such as a hospital. In addition to regular housekeeping duties, staff is routinely involved with waste management (general garbage, recycling and biomedical waste), room set-ups, and small moves. Excellent housekeeping plays an important role in breaking the chain of infection through proper cleaning techniques/tools, appropriate chemicals, and good hand hygiene.
Staying abreast of technological advancements is also important. New methods for cleaning and disinfection are continually evolving. Last year, the housekeeping
department switched to microfiber mops in clinical areas. These new mops are ergonomically friendly for staff and they provide a cleaning surface 40 times greater than conventional string mops. This leads to superior microbial removal and a clean and safe
environment for patients, staff and visitors.
In addition to new advancements, staff education is equally important in an everconscious infection control environment. Staff are constantly being updated and educated on changes or new cleaning techniques, equipment and chemicals. The role that the
environment plays in the spread of infection is a highly studied topic and new information is regularly released and must be adopted.
The NGH housekeeping team takes pride in their work and in keeping a clean and safe environment for all. While staff, patients and visitors may be appreciative of shiny floors and sparkling mirrors, rest assured that the Norfolk General Hospital Housekeeping Department is working diligently to execute its role in breaking the chain of potential
infection.
To acknowledge the hard work of the Housekeeping and Laundry Departments at NGHNHNH,staff will be recognized March 8-12 and celebrate ousekeeping/Laundry Appreciation week with some good food and fun prizes.
