** History of Moncrief Army Community Hospital **
Moncrief Army Community Hospital is located on Fort Jackson, South Carolina and is part of the 82.13 square mile military installation located adjacent to the state capital of Columbia.
Moncrief is named in honor of Colonel William Henry Moncrief, Sr., a former Army Medical Corps surgeon whose career spanned over 41 years of dedicated service. Following his retirement from active duty in 1939, Colonel Moncrief moved to Columbia where he served as Administrator of the South Carolina Sanatorium at State Park until 1954.

Within the 12-story hospital and its related clinics, a wide range of medical services are available, ensuring quality and comprehensive medical care. Those specialties include: Allergy, Cardiology, Family Practice, Oncology, Pediatrics, Gastroenterology, Psychiatry and Internal Medicine. To enhance our services, agreements exist between Moncrief and various universities and other health care facilities. These affiliations provide for student instruction and supervision for clinical learning experiences and an enriched spectrum of clinical modalities. The University of South Carolina, College of Nursing, offers advanced degrees in nursing, while a number of college-level programs are offered through the post Education Center. Residents from the University of South Carolina Medical School, Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital, currently rotate with several medical services at Moncrief. Excellence through education continues as Columbia has available six colleges, two seminaries and two universities. Students may pursue undergraduate, graduate, law or medical degrees.
Moncrief is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the College of American Pathologists, the Association of American Blood Banks and the American Optometrical Association. The facility stresses quality and comprehensive medical care.
** History of Unit Crest **
The Fort Jackson U.S. Army Medical Department Activity crest consists of a maroon Greek cross with a white border, a palmetto tree on a blue background, enclosed by a maroon scroll inscribed "Accentuate the Positive." The colors maroon and white are the official colors of the Army Medical Department. The Greek cross symbolizes aid and assistance (health and helping) and is also the mathematical plus sign which denotes the positive and signifies the unit mission and motto. The palmetto tree denotes the unit location, South Carolina, the Palmetto State. The hickory branch signifies Andrew Jackson, "Old Hickory," a native of South Carolina and the seventh president of the United States after whom Fort Jackson was named. The flaming torch is indicative of learning.
