History Of Delta Regional Medical Center

Delta Regional Medical Center began its legacy of community-based health care in the 1950s as Washington County General Hospital. Since that time, the hospital has continued to grow, meeting the changing needs of area residents.

* 1960s: Addition of an eight-bed intensive care unit, four new nursing units and the enlargement of the physical therapy department, laboratory, and pharmacy.

* 1972: A ten-bed self-contained Critical Care Burn Unit is created.

* 1975: Home Health Agency brings nursing, physical/occupational therapy and speech therapy, hospice care, and home respiratory services to the area.

* 1977: 100 beds are added.

* 1982: Mississippi Firefighter's Memorial Burn Center is constructed.

* 1985: Washington County's only 24-hour emergency room is opened. Also a 15-bed Chemical Dependency Unit is opened.

* 1988: The Bethesda Cancer Treatment Center brings full-service, state-of-the-art cancer treatment close to home.

* 1990: Lighthouse Lodge, which gives patients' family members temporary living quarters close to the hospital, is constructed.

* 1993: Maternal Child Center is opened, featuring comfortable, fully equipped, labor/delivery suites where mothers may remain in one room for all stages of childbirth.

* 1995: An $8 million dollar expansion program that included a new surgical department with the latest in surgical equipment, a sixteen-bed Critical Care Unit, and an eight-bed Pediatric Unit is completed.

* 2000: Inpatient Rehabilitation Center and Wound Healing Center is opened. Heart and Vascular Center's second advanced Cardiac Catheterization and Special Procedures lab is opened. Diagnostic Imaging is acquired.

* 2001: Renovations to Delta Regional’s 24-hour Level II Trauma Center are completed. The Emergency Center also introduced QuikCare emergency service.

* 2003: Abandoned business front Highway 1 is purchased and green space with trees and landscaping is created, changing the appearance of the neighborhood.

* 2004: King’s Daughters Hospital from Community Heath Systems, a national for-profit company, is purchased. This promoted a legacy of KD to the community it has served since the early 1900’s. Delta Regional becomes Mississippi’s 9th largest medical system.

* 2006: A 24-hour Chest Pain Clinic housed in the Emergency Department is added. The following services are also added: Aquatic Therapy, Sports Medicine and Inspirations Outpatient Counseling Program. A total of 24 beds are added to the telemetry unit of the Heart and Vascular Center, the Wound Care Center, and Solutions Senior Care and Adult Care services.
