Serving patients across Sandwell, the Black Country and areas of west and north Birmingham, Sandwell General Hospital provides a comprehensive range of medical and nursing services, including general medicine, surgery, urology, plastic surgery, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, rheumatology, interventional cardiology, maternity and paediatrics. Its £18 million Emergency Services Centre opened in April 2005 and boasts a new A&E department, Emergency Assessment Unit and coronary care facilities with one of the best equipped cardiac care units in Europe. A new £1.85 million critical care unit has also recently opened.
The hospital is easy to access from Junction 1 of the M5 and is close to road, metro and rail links. Originally an addition to the West Bromwich Union workhouse in 1884, it was then known as the Hallam Hospital, and became Sandwell General Hospital after being rebuilt during the 1970s. Although most of the buildings used for patient care have been constructed during the last thirty years, a few surviving buildings from the former workhouse still remain on the site.
