Action team approval for UCLH |
Date : - 31/07/2009 |
The standards of inpatient ward environments, food and privacy and dignity at UCLH have received positive feedback in the latest Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) assessment scores.
The results of this year’s assessments at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, The Heart Hospital and University College Hospital have been published by the National Patient Safety Agency.
Food at all sites was rated ‘excellent’ while the environment and privacy and dignity at the locations were rated as ‘good’.
The performance marks an improvement on last year when the NHNN received ‘acceptable’ for its environment and ‘good’ for food. UCH received ‘good’ in both categories and The Heart’s scores have remained the same.
Louise Boden, UCLH chief nurse, said: "These are encouraging results especially when it comes to the standard of food. But in all other areas we must be careful not to get too complacent and although we received ‘good’ ratings we should be aiming for ‘excellent’ next year."
PEAT is an annual assessment, established in 2000, of inpatient healthcare sites in England with more than ten beds.
The scores demonstrate how well individual healthcare providers believe they are performing in key areas including food, cleanliness, infection control and patient environment (including bathroom areas, décor, lighting, floors and patient areas.
NHS sites are each given scores from 1 (unacceptable) to 5 (excellent) for standards of environment, food and dignity and privacy within buildings.
Asessments are carried out by NHS staff (nurses, matrons, doctors, catering and domestic service managers, executive and non-executive directors, dieticians and estates directors).
Patients, patient representatives and members of the public are also part of this assessment process.
Across the country this year’s PEAT findings show that 84% of the 1,265 sites scored either ‘excellent’ or ‘good’ for their environment, which assessed standards of cleanliness, decoration, linen, furniture and state of repair.
94% of sites achieved an ‘excellent’ or ‘good’ rating for levels of privacy and dignity which examined the quality of sleeping accommodation as well as toilet/bathroom facilities. 95% of sites scored ‘excellent’ or ‘good’ for quality, choice and availability of food for patients. The figures for both of these remain unchanged from last year.
There were 219 sites that scored excellent on all three PEAT categories. However, 17 out of the 1,265 sites were also rated ‘poor’ or ‘unacceptable’ on at least one category.
