About Shivananda Mission
"The World is God, Service of humanity is worship of God", the great Guru Mantra received by Dr. Adhvaryoo from his master H. H. Swami Shivananda Saraswati of Rishikesh, became emblem of Shivananda Mission. Saurashtra Centrel Hospital is Situated in a small village Virnagar, nearby Rajkot (Gujarat). Devotion, hard working and selfless effort of Dr. Adhvaryoo changed the hospital from a small dispensary to largest eye hospital of Gujarat.
Shri Virchand Panachand Shah founded Gram Sudharana Samiti, then Saurashtra Central Hospital in 1937. Shri Virchandbhai was told by Mahatma Gandhi to begin his work from small village so he shifted from Mumbai to Virnagar. His influence upon the village was so high that the old name of the village was changed and the Samadiyala village became Virnagar. Dr. Adhvaryoo came to Virnagar in 1956, talking premature retirement from Govt. job at Patan.
Netra Raksha Charitable Trust was formed in 1969 to accelerate the work of prevention and cure of blindness. The work was highly appreciated and supported by Swiss-aid, Padmashree Dr.Rajendra T. Vyas from Royal Common Wealth Society for the blind and Mrs. Ruth Joshi from Switzerland. Soon, renowned eye surgeons from Switlerland started taking keen interest and joined the task. Dr. Gerhard Payer (Chur), Dr. Bowmann (Iuzern), Dr. Edward Jenny (Baden), Dr. Wildberger (Zurich), and Dr. Lukas Jenny (Baden), all these eye surgeons contributed a lot and they still continue to do so in up gradation of the work.
Shivananda Mission was established in 1981, with aim of expanding the work from health to education, spiritual and other social services.
