About Hospice of Saint John

Since 1977, the Hospice of Saint John has been setting hospice care standards for others to follow. As a priest, a nurse and an educator Father Paul felt that the dying needed to be treated with compassion and dignity. The Hospice has cared for over 30,000 patients and their loved ones, under the philosophy of its founder, Father Paul. The Hospice of Saint John proudly offers an innovative, award-winning program. Years of experience have translated to knowledge, continuity and quality. We are fully accredited by The Joint Commission, the gold standard in health care.

The Hospice of Saint John is a program that enables terminally ill patients to make the most of every moment. Our staff is expert in palliative care (pain management), acute care and respite care. We provide expert guidance through end-of-life concerns in patient's homes, in nursing homes, in assisted living facilities and in our in-patient care facility. Father Paul's philosophy of care and respect for patients and their loved ones lives on in his memory.

** Our Mission **
The mission of the Hospice of Saint John is to provide alternative, supportive and loving care for the terminally ill and their families, with an emphasis on life and living.

** Our Promise **
We promise to do our best to meet the needs of every patient on an individual basis. When patients are counting the moments, we make those moments count.

** Our Future **
Our vision is to maintain our leadership in hospice care and excellence in our services provided for patients and their loved ones. The demand for hospice care is expected to increase in the near future. Thus, we are planning to expand our service abilities, scope of service, service venues and our reach into the community. In addition we plan to remain on the forefront of educating hospice professionals as well as participating in leading edge end-of-life research.

History Of Hospice of Saint John

As the second oldest free standing hospice in the United States, the Hospice of Saint John has built a reputation of unparalled excellence. We are experts in hospice care simply because we have been doing it longer.

In 1977 the Hospice of Saint John began caring for patients. Since then, the Hospice of Saint John has provided end of life care to over 30,000 patients and their families.

Our hospice patients receive the highest quality nursing services, pain management, comfort care, spiritual care, social services, complimentary therapies and bereavement support. Our patients are at the center of the plan of care, which is individually designed by a team of expert caregivers committed to the mission of the Hospice of Saint John: to provide alternative, supportive and loving care for the terminally ill and their families, with an emphasis on life and living.

The Hospice of Saint John program is modeled in the tradition of care originated in 1048 by the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. Their charge was to care for the sick and dying. The Hospice of Saint John continues in this tradition today.

The concept of end of life care, revitalized in the seventies by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, was recognized by Father Paul von Lobkowitz, O.S.J., and a group of prominent members of Denver's community as an opportunity to restore the mission originated in 1048. Part of this mission has been to treat patients and families as a single unit and develop plans for care that facilitate life and living. Today patients, families, and the community are afforded the benefits of a long standing tradition of care that is also recognized for original thinking.
