The Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo (CMHIP) is one of Colorado's two state-operated inpatient psychiatric hospitals. The hospital is under the direction of the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS). The Mental Health Institute Division administers and oversees the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo and the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan. The Division is part of the Colorado Department of Human Services and is organized within the Department’s Office of Behavioral Health and Housing.
CMHIP serves clients in the civil mental health system. Civil clients are referred for admission by the states’s Community Mental Health Centers. In addition, CMHIP’s Institute for Forensic Psychiatry serves adults who are found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity or Incompetent to Proceed (defendants unable to assist in their own defense). CMHIP also provides evaluations of competency to stand trial for individuals referred for evaluation by the state’s courts. CMHIP has provided quality mental health services focused on sustaining hope and promoting recovery to Colorado residents since 1879.
CMHIP works with the Community Mental Health Centers and mental health professionals, patients, families, and mental health advocacy groups toward the goal of preparing our patients to return to their homes and communities. CMHIP is licensed by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment; certified for Medicaid and Medicare participation by the federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services; and accredited by the Joint Commission. Joint Commission accreditation is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization's commitment to meeting performance standards. Information about accredited organizations may be provided directly to the Joint Commission at 1-800-994-6610. Information pertaining to accreditation and the accreditation performance of individual organizations may be obtained through the Joint Commission’s website at www.JointCommission.org.
CMHIP is located in southern Colorado on 300 sprawling, park-like acres. As one of Pueblo's largest employers, we offer career opportunities in many multi-disciplinary professions, including nursing, psychology, social work and medicine.
