About O'connor Hospital

Quality health services and community support have been the tradition at O'Connor Hospital since we opened our doors in 1889. Whether for the birth of a baby or a life-saving surgery, our reputation for medical excellence, superior skills and advanced technology precedes us.

Our Mission & Values

O'Connor Hospital, a member of the Daughters of Charity Health System, is a leader in promoting a healthy Santa Clara County. With the Daughters of Charity, we foster the Catholic Church's healing ministry and are a values-based health-care organization.

Mission Statement

In the spirit of our founders, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Louise de Marillac, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the Daughters of Charity Health System is committed to serving the sick and the poor. With Jesus Christ as our model, we advance and strengthen the healing mission of the Catholic Church by providing comprehensive, excellent healthcare that is compassionate and attentive to the whole person: body, mind and spirit. We promote healthy families, responsible stewardship of the environment, and a just society through value-based relationships and community-based collaboration.

Values of St. Vincent

The charity of Christ urges us to:

Respect
Recognizing our own value and the value of others.

Compassionate Service
Providing excellent care with gentleness and kindness.

Simplicity
Acting with integrity, clarity and honesty.

Advocacy for the Poor
Supporting those who lack resources for a healthy life and full human development.

Inventiveness to Infinity
Being continuously resourceful and creative.

History Of O'connor Hospital

Opened in 1889, O'Connor was the first hospital in Santa Clara County. The original O'Connor Sanitarium, as it was called, was built by Judge Myles P. O'Connor and his wife, Amanda, on 15 acres of country property at the corners of Race and West San Carlos streets.

Known for being benefactors of many charitable organizations, the O'Connors' original intent was to build a home for the elderly, but community needs determined that a hospital was the priority. At the suggestion of Archbishop Riordan of San Francisco, the O'Connors' asked the Daughters of Charity to operate the hospital. On May 1, 1889, four Daughters of Charity members moved into the almost-ready facility, which opened that same month.

In 1953, O'Connor Hospital moved to its present site on Forest Avenue. Still affiliated with the Daughters of Charity Health System, the hospital continues to provide care with a special focus on the needs of the poor and underserved.
