** History of Glenfield Hospital **
Glenfield Hospital has around 520 beds. Like the other hospitals within the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, it is a teaching hospital and has a purpose-built Clinical Education Centre.
The hospital has its own helipad to allow rapid access for helicopters carrying emergency patients to the hospital. It has the sub-regional (Trent) cardiothoracic centre which is the third largest unit in the country.
We started the first ECMO (Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation) programme in the country at Glenfield Hospitaland for both adult and paediatric patients. Today, it is the most successful centre in the world using the ECMO procedures.
Glenfield Hospital has a national and international reputation for cardiology, heart surgery and respiratory medicine for both adults and children.
