About JSEI

Established in 1966, the Jules Stein Eye Institute represents the culmination of a dream shared by ophthalmologist, businessman and philanthropist Dr. Jules Stein and his wife Doris, of creating a world-renowned center dedicated to the preservation of vision and the prevention of blindness. The Institute's comprehensive programs for the care of patients with eye disorders, research in the vision sciences, education in the field of ophthalmology and outreach to the community, coupled with its state-of-the art facilities, have brought national and international recognition to the Institute and UCLA. Many have contributed to this tradition of excellence and many more will carry it forward as the Institute continues its mission to advance ophthalmology worldwide.

The Jules Stein Eye Institute originated with a concept for a comprehensive center for vision science at UCLA, magnanimous philanthropy by Dr. Jules and Mrs. Doris Stein, and endorsement by the University Regents. Conceived in 1961, a dedicated physical facility for the Institute became a reality in 1966. Progressive programs of eye research, education and patient care have placed the Institute among the world’s great centers for vision science.

Plans for an additional facility and imminent breakthroughs in clinical and laboratory research, enabling new treatments for patients during the 21st century, promise to elevate the Institute to the next and higher level of achievement in eradicating blindness and preserving vision.

JSEI AFFILIATES

The Jules and Doris Stein UCLA Support Group launched the JSEI Affiliates in 1990 as a broad-based volunteer network to serve the Jules Stein Eye Institute. The Affiliates' mission is to support the faculty, staff and programs of the Institute and provide outreach to the greater Los Angeles community through vision science education and patient services. Several integrated programs were created to meet this ambitious goal.

Community Outreach and Vision Education

The JSEI Affiliates Community Outreach and Vision Education committees focus on a wide range of vision education and community service programs. Programs such as Vision In-School and Community-Insight provide vision education to groups ranging from elementary school students to local senior citizens, while the Preschool Vision Screening program provides vision screenings to preschool-aged children throughout the greater Los Angeles area.

Patient Services

In addition to outreach and vision education programs, the JSEI Affiliates offer several patient service programs. The Make Surgery Bearable program provides plush Dr. Teddy MD teddy bears to each and every pediatric patient undergoing eye surgery at the Institute. The bears are a small token to help children feel secure during a scary time.

Other patient programs include the Shared Vision and MagniVision programs. Shared Vision is an eyeglass collection and recycling program benefiting those in need. The MagniVision program provides funding for the lending library of low-vision aids at the Institute's Vision Rehabilitation Center.
