Vegetarians may be at risk for eating disorders, study shows |
Date : - 08/04/2009 |
Current and former vegetarians may be at risk for some not-so-healthy eating behaviors, according to a study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.
The study included more than 2,500 young people between ages 15 and 23 who were categorized as nonvegetarians, current vegetarians or former vegetarians.
Researchers noted positive trends among vegetarians, including a lower likelihood of being overweight or obese, as well as a tendency to eat a healthier diet with more fruits and vegetables.
But some disturbing trends were also found. For example, current vegetarians were more likely than nonvegetarians to report binge eating with loss of control.
Among adolescents, former vegetarians were more likely than nonvegetarians to use extreme unhealthy weight-control behaviors such as:
* Taking diet pills.
* Inducing vomiting
* Using laxatives.
* Using diuretics
Among young adults in the study, former vegetarians were more likely to engage in such unhealthy practices compared to current vegetarians and nonvegetarians.
Study authors suggests it may be helpful for doctors to ask adolescents and young people about current or former vegetarian eating habits when determining risk for eating disorders and related behavior.
They also note it may be important to find out an individual's motives for choosing a vegetarian diet
