MedStar Health Appoints Kenneth A. Samet
Date : - 01/01/2008
Region’s Largest Healthcare System Assured Continued Excellence in Patient Care
Columbia, Md., January 1, 2008-Kenneth A. Samet is officially taking the helm of MedStar Health as its President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) today. Samet, with more than 25 years experience within the $3 billion non-profit healthcare system, served as the system’s President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the past five years, and as its COO since the system’s inception 10 years ago
“It is an honor to be named President and CEO of MedStar Health. I have had the unique privilege of dedicating my entire career to this wonderful organization. I am very proud to be a part of this special team of MedStar Health professionals, and have seen first-hand the important work we do for our patients, their families and the communities we serve,” said Kenneth A. Samet, President and CEO. “I am energized about the system’s future and continued growth in meeting the healthcare needs of the Baltimore-Washington region.”
Samet succeeds John P. McDaniel, who served as MedStar’s initial CEO, who announced his retirement in October 2006. The health system’s Board of Directors selected Samet as the successor at that time
“The MedStar Health Board has had the distinct pleasure of working with Ken Samet for the past decade, and we unanimously support his appointment as the new President and CEO for the system,” stated E. F. Shaw Wilgis, M.D., Chairman, MedStar Health Board of Directors. “We are fortunate to have someone of his caliber and national stature within health care to ensure a seamless leadership transition, as well as to maintain our competitiveness in the marketplace. Mr. Samet’s vision and his unique grasp of the system’s operations better enables us to fulfill our vision of being the trusted leader in caring for people and advancing health.”
Formed in 1998 when Medlantic Healthcare Group of Washington, DC, merged with Helix Health of Baltimore, Md., MedStar Health became the largest, not-for-profit community-based healthcare network in the Baltimore-Washington region. Since then, MedStar Health has grown to be among the largest health systems in America, focusing on excellence in patient care, research and education. MedStar Health consists of an extensive network of healthcare providers and facilities which include seven hospitals across the Baltimore-Washington corridor, 18 integrated patient care entities providing a full range of acute and critical care services, emergency care, ambulatory care, and outpatient activities, physical rehabilitation, home care and long-term care offerings. MedStar Health is among the region’s largest employers with more than 23,000 employees and 4,600 affiliated physicians, serving more than 1.5 million patients annually on both an inpatient and outpatient basis
Prior to serving as MedStar’s President and COO, Samet was the President of Washington Hospital Center from 1990-2000. He is presently a member of the Board of Directors at Georgetown University, and is also the Vice Chair of the McLean School of Maryland. He has held leadership positions on the boards of the American Hospital Association (AHA), District of Columbia Hospital Association and Maryland Hospital Association. Samet most recently served as the immediate-past Chairman of AHA’s Regional Policy Board III. In addition, he also served on the Board of Visitors for the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Samet is also a past board member and chair of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Old Dominion University Board of Visitors, where he received his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1980. He received his master's degree in health services administration from the University of Michigan in 1982. In 1996, the American College of Healthcare Executives named Samet the national Young Healthcare Administrator of the Year.
MedStar Health is a $3 billion non-profit healthcare organization and a community-based network of seven hospitals and other healthcare services in the Baltimore-Washington region. The hospitals, which include both teaching and community facilities, are Franklin Square Hospital Center, Good Samaritan Hospital, Harbor Hospital, and Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Md., and Georgetown University Hospital, National Rehabilitation Hospital, and Washington Hospital Center in the District of Columbia.
