Barrow Regional Medical Center
Barrow Regional Becomes Teaching Facility for Doctors
Date : - 30/06/2009
Barrow Regional Medical Center is growing in stature as a clinical teaching hospital for area colleges and universities, including the University of Georgia, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Lanier Technical College, and Athens Technical College.

The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) is the latest school that has chosen Barrow Regional as a teaching facility. Medical students must go through a series of rotations in their third and fourth years that will help them decide which specialty to choose before they begin their residency programs. Barrow Regional began hosting medical students from PCOM last year when Kirk Munsayac, DO, served a clerkship under Dr. Christopher Brandys, a general surgeon at Barrow Regional Medical Center. Munsayac said he chose Barrow Regional because of the opportunity to work closely with patients and healthcare staff.

“At Barrow, it's you and the physician instructing you. You have direct contact with the doctor, PA, Nurse, surgical tech and any and every healthcare provider that you have interest in learning from.” Munsayac continued: “EVERYONE has such wonderful knowledge to share.”

During Munsayac’s rotations at Barrow Regional, he shadowed Dr. Brandys for general surgery and cosmetic and aesthetic procedures, Dr. Rhett Rainey, an orthopaedic surgeon, and Dr. Savoy Brummer, Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Barrow Regional Medical Center.

Munsayac’s best friend was one of many medical students who chose to do his surgery rotation at one of the large Atlanta hospitals: “While he spent the month standing on a stool in the corner of an OR trying to crane his neck to see these cases, I sat directly across from Dr. Brandys and assisted with every surgery. Dr. Brandys showed me what he was doing, why, how, and what to expect.”

Working with the students is an eye-opener for the physicians and the patients, according to Brummer. “Students can get one-on-one and talk to the patients, ask the physician the right questions, and perhaps even challenge a physician’s diagnosis or treatment. It is a part of the learning process, and patients can benefit from this just as much as the student.”

Like Munsayac, Brummer also observed how unique a small hospital is. “We have just as much variety of illnesses and injuries as a large hospital, but at the same time, afford a more hands-on approach for the medical students.”

Brummer’s current student, Roberto Herrerra, another student from PCOM, also recounted the one-on-one time that he could spend with the physicians while on rotation.

“If I was at a larger facility, I may be working with residents who are also training, and who report to attending physicians,” said Herrera. “At Barrow, I am able to work directly with the attending physician.”

Barrow Regional reaches out to high school students as well through the Youth Apprentice Program with Winder-Barrow High School and Apalachee High School. The program allows the students to shadow healthcare professionals in various departments and help them decide to pursue a career in healthcare.

In addition, Barrow Regional is in its fifth year of hosting the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine, a program for high school students from across the United States who have chosen an area of medicine for their future career.

Barrow Regional is continually working with area educational institutions to provide teaching opportunities at the facility, including future opportunities for MCG-SONAT undergraduate and graduate students, and MRI students at Greenville Tech.
