We feel it is vital to invest in and support our staff so that we can offer the highest clinical care to our patients and this award is testament to the dedication of all our employees. When our staff invest in their own health and wellbeing they become excellent role models to our patients and this reflects the important role we play in promoting healthy living in the larger population we serve.”
The joint ‘Investors in People and Staying Healthy at Work Award’ recognised Papworth Hospital as achieving:

• A significant investment made in educational and academic learning
• A recognition strategy with rewards and benefits package which goes far beyond legal requirements
• A loyal and dedicated workforce
• Large numbers of highly skilled innovative people in clinical and non clinical areas
• A real commitment from the top to make the organisation the best it can be.
Sarah Boulton, Chair of NHS East of England comments: “Providing high quality care for patients requires a high quality workforce and Papworth Hospital is a shining example of an employer investing in its staff.”
Elizabeth Horne, Director of Human Resources, Papworth Hospital says: “Papworth’s success as a leading heart and lung hospital is down to our excellent staff who go the extra mile every day to care for our patients. We are very proud to be the first NHS hospital in the country to receive this award and the early results of our programme demonstrate that our sickness absence has reduced significantly. This award is evidence of our deep commitment to the development, education and support of all our staff at Papworth as well as the personal responsibility staff are taking for their own health and wellbeing.”
Papworth Hospital’s successful Health and Wellbeing programme for staff has been running since the beginning of the year and involves activities run by staff members such as keeping active and musculoskeletal support which involves a walking group and discounted shiatsu treatments; mental wellbeing and counseling support; and healthy eating advice and support.
