History Of Chapleau General Hospital
** History and Culture **
** Rich History and Culture **
The earliest Europeans came to work for the Hudson Bay Company who established a fur trading post on Big Missinaibi Lake in 1777, about 50 miles north of Chapleau. In 1885 the Canadian Pacific Railway was built through the Chapleau area and that is how the town began.
Chapleau is referred to by its community and visitors as the "Gateway to the Largest Crown Game Preserve in the World". This is due to Chapleau's location at the foot of the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve, a protected wildlife habitat covering over 7,000 square kilometres.
Being so close to an abundance of wildlife and unspoiled nature has transformed this town into a hotspot for tourists, sportsmen, and visitors alike. Many of Chapleau's long-time residents were once visitors who were taken by the unsurpassed beauty and tranquility offered here.
